EC standard 11801 describes and defines the star-topology structure for IT cabling that is installed around the world without any limitations. Initially designed for the network topology in offices, the definitions have now been taken over and adapted for other applications (e.g. ISO/IEC 24702 for industrial premises).

As an alternative to the standard link with two patch cords and the fixed installation cable, the IEC 24702 (for industrial premises) and IEC 61918 (draft, automation) standards define a simplified data channel, the so-called switchlink.
This is characterized by the fact that the fixed installation cable is fed directly into the terminal, so that one connection less is needed. This saves one outlet, one module and a patch cord.
